10th Conference, Vancouver 2007

International Health Workforce Collaborative LogoThis series of conferences brings together policy makers and academics from the United States, Canada, Australia and United Kingdom with responsibility for and interests in medical workforce issues. The participant mix has traditionally included both policy makers, medical practitioners and economists, and the approach taken seeks to be rigorous and evidence based.

The aims of the conferences are:

  • to promote exchange of policy approaches across countries that address medical workforce planning and that enhance the ability of each country to respond to workforce needs;
  • to promote understanding of global trends that affect medical workforce policies; and
  • to promote international collaboration in medical workforce research, evaluation and forecasting.

This year the conference will include an over-arching them of inter-professional care. Each IMWC country has introduced policies and incentives to promote and develop inter-professional care teams in order to enhance one or more of the following:

  • Improved health care outcomes including improved chronic disease management, continuity of care and reductions in medical error;
  • Access to care including underserved populations;
  • Healthier populations through health promotion and disease prevention;
  • Patient and provider satisfaction including leadership and identity in a changing health care environment; and
  • Recruitment and retention of health care providers.

The participating countries will present information within the context of inter-professional care on the following themes:

  • Medical leadership;
  • Equitable justice;
  • Health outcomes; and
  • Recruitment and retirement.

For more details please view preliminary program below.

The format of the conferences has been designed to generate as much interaction amongst the participants as possible. Each country prepares a research paper on the above conference themes and are circulated in advance to all participants. Pre-selected discussants present a compilation of the four papers for each theme as a prelude to opening discussion to the floor.
